Breast Reconstruction
This 38 year-old woman was diagnosed with right breast cancer after finding a lump. Given the size of the tumor, her surgeon recommended right mastectomy and with her family history of breast cancer, she elected to have prophylactic left mastectomy as well. At the time of her mastectomies, she had reconstruction of both breasts with tissue expanders followed later by placement of silicone implants and nipple reconstruction. At the time of surgery she was 5’4” and weighed 120 lbs.

This 71 year-old woman had been treated previously for right breast cancer with a mastectomy and radiation therapy. She was uncomfortable wearing an external prosthesis and desired reconstruction of her breast. This was accomplished using tissue from her back (a latissimus dorsi flap) and a tissue expander in the first phase of breast reconstruction. She later underwent placement of a saline breast implant in the reconstructed breast and a breast lift on the other breast to improve her symmetry. Nipple reconstruction was done on the right breast in the third and final stage of reconstruction. Height: 5’5” Weight: 150 lbs.

This is a 52 year-old woman was diagnosed with left breast cancer that was initially treated with a lumpectomy. Despite a large lumpectomy that included removal of her nipple and areola, the cancer had not been completely removed and a mastectomy was recommended. Reconstruction began at the time of her mastectomy with a latissimus dorsi flap (tissue from her back) and placement of a tissue expander. The tissue expander was later replaced by a saline breast implant. In the final stage of her reconstruction, the left nipple areolar complex was reconstructed using skin from her breast and inner thigh. The patient did not want to undergo surgery on the right breast to improve the shape of her breasts or to make the right nipple areolar complex smaller, which would more closely match the size that could be achieved with reconstruction. Height: 5’11” Weight: 250 lbs.
