Restylane

Restylane is an injectable filler made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally-occurring substance in normal skin.  Restylane injections are performed in the office and there is only minor swelling and redness following the procedure. The results of Restylane usually last 6 to 9 months, though longer results have been achieved with repeated treatments.

Juvederm

Juvederm is another injectable filler made of hyaluronic acid and is similar to Restylane.  Because of a slight difference in the manufacturing process, studies have shown that the results after treatment with Juvederm may last 9 to 12 months.  As with Restylane, the procedure is performed in the office and is associated with minor swelling and redness that typically resolves within 24 hours.

Radiesse

Radiesse is an injectable filler that is made of a synthetic material.  When it is injected into the face, it creates a framework onto which the patient’s body deposits collagen.  Because it is stimulating the patient’s body to deposit collagen, it is associated with a little more swelling than the hyaluronic acid products, but this typically subsides within 24 to 48 hours.  The benefit of this filler, however, is that its results can last 12 to 18 months and for patients who require larger volumes of fillers, it is more cost effective as well.  Radiesse is typically used to treat lines in the lower face and can also be used to enhance the shape of the jaw line, chin, and cheeks.

Fat Transfer

In some patients, their own fat may be used to fill in areas of depression or lines on the face.  This procedure can be done alone, or may be combined with a facelift.  During a fat transfer, liposuction is used to remove fat from another part of the body (the abdomen is commonly used) and this fat is then injected into the face.  When fat is transferred, some of the fat will survive permanently, while some will be reabsorbed by the body.  Fat transfer may be repeated, if desired.  This procedure may be done in the office or in a surgical center under anesthesia depending on the extent of fat transfer being performed and whether another surgical procedure is being performed at the same time.
