Microneedling and Platelet Rich Plasma

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure in which tiny needles are used to puncture the skin, creating thousands of microchannels or tiny holes through the skins surface.  While this sounds like it could be painful, topical anesthetic is applied prior to the procedure and most patients experience little to no discomfort (some describe it as feeling like microdermabrasion).  As the microchannels heal, elastin and collagen production is promoted, minimizing the appearance of acne scars, surgical scars, stretch marks and fine lines and wrinkles!   Microneedling is commonly used to treat the face but can be used on all parts of the body!
Microneedling is safe for all skin types and typically requires between 3-6 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart for optimal results.

Why do we use Skinpen?

We prefer to use the Skinpen as our microneedling device as it is the first microneedling device in the world to be FDA approved for the safe and effective treatment of facial acne scars. 90% of patients in clinical trials stated they would recommend Skinpen treatment to their friends and family.  We also like the Skinpen as many safety measures have been put in place to protect the patient during treatment including sterile single use needle cartridges and a bio-sheath that prevents cross contamination between procedures on different patients.  Safety measures such as these, are a part of the reason why Skinpen is the first microneedling device to be cleared by the FDA.

What is PRP?

Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP is retrieved from your own blood sample.  The blood is spun in a centrifuge to separate the PRP from the rest of your blood.  The platelets in the plasma activate and release growth factors that are able to maximize tissue repair and rejuvenation.

What are Exosomes?

Exosomes are tiny “bubbles” that can carry many different substances, such as growth factors, RNA, lipids and proteins. The substances found in the exosomes are created specifically to target aging and wrinkled skin, which helps to stimulate the natural repair mechanism of damaged tissues and create healthy, new tissues. Exosomes are beneficial to the skin in so many ways including increased collagen production, improved skin texture, decreased skin pigmentation and reduced fine lines and wrinkles. They are also anti-inflammatory, which speeds up the healing process, resulting in less down time.

Microneedling plus PRP or Exosomes:

While microneedling alone is a great option for many patients, adding PRP or exosomes to your treatment can intensify your results and lessen your downtime following the procedure.   When PRP/exosomes are combined with Microneedling, they are able to penetrate the skins surface, resulting in an increase of collagen and extracellular matrix production.  They have also been shown to support hyaluronic acid production in the skin. The growth factors also speed up the healing process, resulting in less down time! Ask which is right for  you!

What to expect after a treatment:

Pinpoint bleeding and moderate redness is to be expected initially after the treatment.  You will look as though you have a moderate to severe sunburn and your skin may feel warm, tight and dry.  This is normal and will start to subside within a few hours.  After 24 hours you may still have some redness and a few pinpoint bruises, especially near bony areas such as the forehead, nose and around the eyes.  Slight peeling and dryness may also occur 24-48 hours after the procedure.   A few days after your procedure you can expect to see a brighter and smoother complexion, but with multiple treatments you can expect to see an improvement in the appearance of acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles and a reduction in pore size!

What to avoid after a treatment:

The microchannels in the skin remain open for up to 24 hours, and during this time it is crucial that you do not apply any makeup or skincare products, other than those provided to you by your practitioner.  To ensure the proper healing environment for your skin and to obtain the best results, please follow these post treatment instructions:
  • Avoid intentional and direct sun contact for 24 hours (no tanning beds!)
  • Do not go swimming or exercise for 24 hours after your treatment
  • Do not resume any of your normal skincare products for at least 24 hours, 72 hours if you use any active skincare such as glycolic acid or retinol.
