Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation is a surgical procedure to enhance the size and shape of a woman’s breast through the use of implants.

There are two types of breast implants available in the US, saline implants and silicone implants.  Within these basic categories are different options available including round implants and shaped implants (also known as “gummy bear implants”), as well as different profiles that can be used to try to meet a woman’s goals in terms of the size, shape, and feel of her breasts.
There are advantages to each type of implant that Dr. Peters will be happy to discuss with patients during their personalized consultation.  Dr. Peters has also written several blogs outlining the nuances of these various implant options.  Please feel free to visit our blog page for more information about implants.

The surgery is usually performed using general anesthesia using an incision either around the areola or underneath the breast. A pocket is then created, either just underneath the breast tissue or below the chest wall muscle, into which the implants are placed. The skin is then closed using hidden, dissolvable stitches. Surgery generally lasts about 90 minutes.
Most women will feel tired and sore for several days following surgery and depending on what type of work they do, will take up to a week off work.
