Excess hanging skin can be a troubling problem for patients who have lost a significant amount of weight.
A lower body lift is an operation that is designed to remove excess skin and fat of the abdomen, hips, back, and outer thighs. It is particularly helpful for patients who, through episodes of weight gain and loss, have stretched the skin in these areas.
Prior to a lower body lift, the amount of skin to be removed is carefully marked. The operation is performed under general anesthesia and usually takes about 6 hours.
Following surgery, the patient is fitted in a snug garment that supports the area during healing. Drains are left in place for several weeks to reduce the risk of fluid accumulation under the skin. Some patients will spend a night in the hospital and take 2-4 weeks off of work to recover from surgery. The scar fades over 12 months and, although it will never completely disappear, is usually covered by most underwear and bathing suits.
These procedures are typically performed when the patient is at or near their goal weight and their weight has been stable for several months.
